Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo 書道)

In this course students can enjoy Shodo, the traditional Japanese art of brush-stroke calligraphy. Shodo is more than skillful drawing of characters on paper; it is also a spiritual practice that focuses on balance, beauty and the mind-body connection.

The course begins with learning about the paper, brushes and ink and basic techniques such as how to draw simple lines, as well as tips on how to handle the brush. Particular attention will be paid to the correct stroke order and the different types of strokes used in the writing of the Japanese characters.

Students will have the opportunity to learn this traditional art under the supervision of a professional Shodo instructor. Instructor Hekuin Oda  Sensei is a licensed instructor of both of the major Shodo associations in Japan and is the founder of Oda Caliigraphy School.

Continuing students will have the opportunity to have their work evaluated and ranked by professionals of the Shojikai Japan Headquarters.

Classes are on-going and interested students can join at any time. Once registered, class fees are paid by monthly dues, with an additional fee for the monthly text. Shodo supplies (brush, ink, etc) are necessary for this class and are available for purchase from the Institute.
